About

Self-taught in the carving process, Michael’s art education began with a design-intensive BFA in Graphic Communications at the University of Houston, a program centered on the ethos and process of Swiss design. While working in Houston in an architectural firm as a graphic designer, he began to develop his sculpture practice in his spare time, designing and carving organic, dynamic sculptures. His familiarity with wood made it the natural choice for a sculpture medium, and direct carving from a solid block was an inherently natural process. He later made use of other mediums such as carved stone, bronze casting, cement on steel armature and multilayered polyester resin casting. With his first show at Hooks-Epstein Gallery in Houston, Michael’s sculptures are in private collections in the US and Europe.

“My sculptures are typically an exploration of the balanced relationship between geometric structure and fluidity. This balance is evident in natural forms. The structure creates a sense of stability, while the motion of smooth curves and continuous line offers balance and harmony. While I’m naturally drawn to the carving process, there are times when other materials and methods lend themselves better to a design’s creation.”
